Very soon, a bullet-proof glass wall will shield the Eiffel Tower – one of the seven Wonders of the World and a trademark of Paris.
THE BULLET-PROOF GLASS SHIELD
Yes! Tourists can soon notice an 8-feet (2.5 metres) bullet-proof glass wall around the iconic monument of Paris. The wall will protect both visitors and tower from any potential terror attacks.
At the moment, a metallic fence surrounds the iron lattice Tower. This is put up as a temporary measure for last year’s European football championships 2016.
THE INCREASING THREATS
In a statement released with the report, Paris city hall claimed that the eight–foot wall that costs around €20 million ($21.4 million or approx ₹14.5 Crores) will replace the existing metal fences.
Paris Deputy Mayor Jean-Francois Martins said,
The terror threat remains high in Paris, and the most vulnerable sites, starting with the Eiffel Tower, must be the object of special security measures.
We have three aims: improve the look, make access easier and strengthen the protection of visitors and staff.
Further, he also claimed that glass is the perfect substitute for the metal fence. In fact, the metal fence spoils the view of the iconic tower. On the other hand, it prevents visitors and vehicles from storming the site.
However, Paris always remains on high alert following the series of attacks over the past two years that took the lives of more than 230 people. This step to strengthen the security of the exemplary structure is indeed much appreciable.
